An Introduction...

About a year ago I started to walk the paths outside the perimeter of our Kibbutz — Maale Gilboa. I quickly came to realise how close we are to the security fence that runs along the green line and two neighbouring Palestinian villages. In some places I found myself a few dozen meters from the homes in Jilboun. I wondered about the people who live there. What do they think of me? What is their life like? Are they interested in co-existence? Can they appreciate the need for a Jewish state? 

At the same time, I was stuck by the beautiful landscape that surrounds my home —the steep slopes to the north, the rolling hills to the south, the pastoral Arab villages, the minarets, the JNF forests, the quilt like patches of farm land. I began to document the scenes by taking pictures on my walks and posting them to an album on my Facebook page. Not long after this, I received a friend request from Bashir (a pseudonym — see below). It turns out that he lives in one of the Arab villages I had been walking past and had somehow come across my pictures on the web. He was looking for the same thing that I was, to connect with someone who lives so geographically close and yet so far away.

Here was the opportunity I was looking for — a chance to communicate with an Arab neighbour. We have had some nice back and forth chatting over Facebook, though it is clear to me that his awkward English must originate on google translate. 

Recently, he raised the idea of somehow trying to make some sort of connection between the Jewish and non-Jewish communities on the mountain. I responded with an idea that I had been thinking about for quite some time — a blog in which members of our communities could share with each other our thoughts, our dreams, our daily routines, and our opinions about each-other and the conflict. Bashir responded positively. However since operation protective edge, he has become concerned about harassment by those embittered over Israel’s actions in Gaza and he has asked to remain anonymous. I will honour this request. For that reason I refer to him by the pseudonym Bashir.

What do I hope to come of this blog? I have no pretence that communication between our communities will lead to peace, love, and harmony. In fact, I am concerned that it might go the other direction. However, I do think we owe it to ourselves to know who our neighbours are as directly as possible. I want my life on this mountain and this country to be informed by knowledge of the people with whom I share this land.

In that spirit, let me tell you something about myself. I made Aliya to Israel from the United States 4 years ago. I am married and a father of four. I love music, reading, my family, and the community I live in. I am an ardent Zionist who believes that Jews have a right to sovereignty in our homeland. I also believe that the current situation in the West Bank that denies Palestinians full political rights is unjust. I hope for a two state solution in which both Jews and Palestinian Arabs live in dignity, security, and peace. Bashir has shared his doubts with me about this, but I haven’t given up.

So what do I want to hear from you my Arab neighbours? What are your stories about the Gilboa? What is the history of your village? Who are your heroes? What books do you think I should be reading? And yes, what do you think about the conflict? I hope we can forge constructive communication that is respectful even when we disagree.

לפני כשנה התחלתי ללכת בשבילים מחוץ למתחם של הקיבוץ שלנו - מעלה גלבוע. מהר מאד גיליתי כמה קרובים אנחנו לגדר ההפרדה המשתרעת לאורך הקו הירוק ולשני הכפרים הפלסטיניים השכנים. במקומות מסוימים מצאתי את עצמי כמה עשרות מטרים מהבתים שבכפר ג״לבון. הסתכרנתי על האנשים שחיים שם. מה הם חושבים עלי? מה הם החיים שלהם? האם הם מעוניינים בדו קיום? האם הם יכולים להעריך את הצורך במדינה יהודית? 

באותה מידה, רתק אותי הנוף היפה שמקיף את הבית שלי -המדרונות התלולים לכיוון צפון, הגבעות בדרום, הכפרים הפסטורליים הערבים, צריחי המסגדים, יערות קק”ל, רבועי האדמות החקלאיות . התחלתי לצלם את הסצנות ולתלות התמונות באלבום בדף הפייסבוק שלי. זמן לא רב אחר כך, קבלתי בקשת חברות מבשיר (שם בדוי - ראו בהמשך). מתברר שהוא גר באחד הכפרים הערבים השכנים וראה איכשהו את הנוף המוכר לו בתמונות שלי באינטרנט. כמוני הוא רצה ליצור קשר עם מישהו שגר כל כך קרוב גיאוגרפית ובכל זאת כל כך רחוקה. 

כאן הייתה ההזדמנות שאני חפשתי - הזדמנות לתקשר עם השכן ערבי. פטפטנו בפייסבוק, ולמרות שנראה לי שאנגלית המגומגמת שלו תוצר של תרגום של גוגל, הספקנו לתקשר בנושאים חשובים ומענינים.

לאחרונה, הוא העלה את הרעיון לקשר בין הקהילות היהודיות והלא יהודיות על ההר. אני הגבתי ברעיון שאני כבר חושב עליו הרבה זמן - בלוג שבו חברי הקהילות שלנו יכולים לחלוק אחד עם השני את המחשבות שלנו, החלומות שלנו, שגרה היומיומית שלנו, וחוות דעת שלנו לגבי הסכסוך. בשיר הגיב באופן חיובי. עם זאת מאז התחלת מבצע צוק איתן, הוא פוחד מהטרדה על ידי אלה שלא מוכנים לסבול קשר אם ״האיוב הישראלי״ והוא ביקש להישאר בעילום שם. אני מכבד את הבקשה הזו. מהסיבה הזאת אני מתייחס אליו על ידי השם הבדוי בשיר. 

מה הצפיות שלי מן הבלוג הזה? אין לי יומרה שתקשורת בין הקהילות שלנו תוביל לשלום, אהבה, והרמוניה. למעשה, אני חושש שזה עלול ללכת לכיוון האחר. עם זאת, אני חושב שאנחנו חייבים לדעת מי השכנים שלנו באופן ישיר ככל האפשר. אני רוצה שהחיים שלי על ההר הזה ובמדינה הזאת יקחו בחשבון האנשים שאיתם אני חולק את הארץ הזאת. 

ברוח זו, הרשה לי לספר לכם משהו על עצמי. אני עליתי לארץ מארצות הברית לפני 4 שנים. אני נשוי ואב לארבעה. אני אוהב מוסיקה, קריאה, המשפחה שלי, והקהילה שאני חי בה. אני ציוני נלהב שמאמין שיש ליהודים זכות לריבונות במולדת שלנו. אני גם מאמין שהמצב הנוכחי בגדה השולל  מן הפלסטינים זכויות פוליטיות מלאות הוא לא צודק. אני חולם על פתרון של שתי מדינות לשני עמים שבו היהודים והערבים הפלסטיניים יחיו בכבוד, ביטחון, ושלום. בשיר שיתף אותי בספקות שלו לגבי הישום של זה, אבל אני לא ויתרתי. 

אז מה אני רוצה לשמוע ממך השכנים הערבים שלי? מה הם הסיפורים שלכם על גלבוע? מהי ההיסטוריה של הכפר שלכם? מי הגיבורים שלכם? איזה ספרים אתם ממליצים לי לקרוא? וכן, מה אתה חושב על הסכסוך? 

אני מקווה שנוכל ליצור תקשורת בונה ומכבדת גם כאשר אנחנו לא מסכימים.
